Onto month two of uni now and it really doesn't slow down does it. I've made so many films now that it feels strange to include all of them. ICZ have been great, I've worked with them a few times now and I've even done some camera operating as well as running and rigging. I've done quite well considering I don't understand anything about rugby. I've also just signed up to work on the film 'hood: a legend reborn' as a second AC, which I'm looking forward to immensely- and I'm only a first year. I've been making several films with uni- the graded one is going... ok. Not good not bad. What I'm really proud of are the short projects I've done in my spare time including Breakfast Pasta and A-level Media Masterclass. They were really quick, really fun and have some of the best production value of all of the things I've done. I'm going to send them into some film festivals and see how that goes. I've also had time for a social life and by social life I mean staying up until 3am trying to get a tv to work so we can watch Into the Spiderverse.
All is well- the Filoman

I've been at film uni for 3 weeks now, and boy howdy have I been active. I've directed a short in 48 hours, been camera operator for the Man of Steel awards, and started writing/directing two , more films, on top of 'Under Railroad Tracks' which is still in production. Uni is a wild ride. And it's good. I've even managed to squeeze some studying in between all the late nights and malnutrition. We out here film making, risk taking, care taking and heart breaking. I hope this doesn't make me look unprofessional. Any employers please note that I am a professional and serious person but also note that this is my blog and I get to choose the casual/comedic tone.
-The Filoman SpyDad is finished? It's been so long but it's finally a finished product that I can point at and be like 'thats me'. I'm very proud of it, it came out looking quite nice considering the circumstances (two person film crew, one of who was a child for almost the entire process). it's got my heart in it. Fingers crossed I can get it into some film festivals Meanwhile, Under Railroad Tracks has been shot almost completely. I'm only writer/co-director on this so I'm waiting on fellow director Rafael Redoble to complete the rough cut. Its going to be a noirish thriller, with original music (a love of mine). We've just moved to Salford uni, so it may be held up for a bit. Salford Uni is really nice, I love my room- let's hope I love the course just as much. My timetable is a bit sparse but hopefully that leaves time for more film making.
Until I find something to complain about- The Filoman Since I've been focusing on A-levels, little film stuff has happened. But that's over now, and I'm making new things so here's a progress update. Spydad is trundling along as usual, I hope to upload that before I leave for Uni in September. This summer I've been working on recording all of Art books from the past four years. It took 9 hours to render 1 minutes of footage, and then I had to replace all of it's music with covers because youtube got me good on copyright grounds. But it's done for your viewing pleasure now. Also, I've written a script to be filmed and directed by my friends while I'm away on holiday. I figured it would be good practice for letting go of control when I'm not director of every project. But I trust the director to make it well and I'm really excited to see what the others turn my script into. I'll also be filming a cooking video for a friend, we'll see how that goes. Hopefully better than when I'm cooking. Uni is coming up, but that won't stop me going overboard with work during my holidays.
-Filoman Woman -So despite not blogging about it, I have done multiple things recently. For one, the fiction writing course is going well. I'm director of the Lost in Translation group who are a delight to work with. We have real paid actors, in a real 4 star hotel with real free teas and coffees. We finished day one of shooting yesterday and it's going well (we were even ahead of schedule!) I think being overly specific about framing is going to make this film work. Her are some pictures from pre-production. Also, the first cut of my twenty minute short epic that has taken 4 years is done. We might even get it done BEFORE I go to university. Crazy, right? We shot the opening this week, morph suits and costumes galore. Note: morph suits that are too big are impossible to see out of. Wowee, maybe this film making lark ain't so bad after all.
Filoman These past couple weeks have been BUSY. Firstly, I've been to two Uni interviews and now have 3 offers! I'm really happy about that, but my first choice interview is today- that's nerve racking compared to the others. Hopefully it goes well and I can type up all about it. My other two interviews were just conversations on couches, while this one will be more intense. On a more photographed note, I started the BFI fiction filmmaking course a few weeks ago! Travelling back and forth from Carlisle to Newcastle twice a week is tiring, but not as bad as it sounds: and definitely worth it. There's about twenty other kids on the course and they're all really nice, it's surreal speaking to people with an interest in film making after spending so much time in film limbo or filmbo. The course runners try really hard to make sure we learn and have a good time, and the equipment is the best I've ever used (sony PXW-Z150 I think). It's great to look over fiction writing again with someone who know wha their talking about, and i'm learning a lot about balancing out my confidence in a team setting. On the one hand, it helps to organise people and to have things run faster, on the other it can over shadow other people-not good. It'll get easier once they get more confident with film-making. Practice makes perfect (that's a comment about me not them by the way).
Trying her best as always -Filoman It's done !!! Let's hope it gets marked well. That is all
-Filoman P.S. Salford, if you're reading this, I really enjoyed your mini open day. So this week I went to the Carlisle Film Fling. It says a lot about Carlisle that I was friends with the majority of the film makers showcasing there (four). Films made on a tiny budget can still be fun and it was really fun - I hope it keeps growing. Go Phil for setting it up. Also, I got accepted onto a 10 week screenwriting course with the BFI in Newcastle. Really looking forward to that, if not the sacrificing my thursdays and saturdays to 3 hour commutes.
Stay tuned for the finished media project coming this week (as i anyone is reading this??) -Filoman Just finished editing the Vietnam footage. Could be better but it could also have taken me more than a week so I think I made the right choice. Nothing else to say really Oh, my A level coursework film is mostly finished now so that should be up in a few weeks (after mocks). I've also started making flip through of my artbook video, don't know about that either.
This week I've learnt that this website is extremely hard to find- if you're reading this I salute you. Seeya next time with some more evaluative information- the filoman So I've finished shooting my A level coursework (mostly) and I have my first draft. I'll admit I let pride get the better of me and overestimated my skills- I'm not the best film maker alive yet. After lowering my expectations, I'm happy with the results so far, but there's still a way to go. Lessons taken away: Actors need strong direction, think about angles always- they'll save the framing, Brightness and contrast are my best friends, be more authoritarian with the tripod, don't doubt the writing on set and most importantly I'll never be satisfied. I've applied for a BFI course, and I hope I get on because I'd like to try doing one job really well- rather than every job as best I can. Confidence punctured, outlook positive. Film looking good. -the filoman woman (^that's me^)
